The Turin: Italianate Elegance with Parkside Charm

Origins and Construction

Located at 333 Central Park West, The Turin is a boutique pre-war cooperative that brings European charm and architectural distinction to the Upper West Side. Completed in 1909 and designed by Rosario Candela—one of New York’s most revered architects—The Turin was named after the Italian city of Torino, reflecting a spirit of continental elegance. Built at a time when the Upper West Side was emerging as a haven for wealthy New Yorkers seeking quieter luxury, The Turin offered a more intimate, refined alternative to the larger buildings rising nearby.

Design and Architecture

The building is an exquisite example of Renaissance Revival design, with a stately limestone base, decorative cornices, and terracotta detailing. With only twelve stories and a relatively small number of units, The Turin exudes privacy and intimacy, wrapped in architectural elegance. Interiors reflect Candela’s signature style and include:

  • Wide layouts and long galleries ideal for art collections.
  • Generous ceiling heights and wood-burning fireplaces.
  • Intricate moldings, wainscoting, and inlaid hardwood floors.
  • Expansive windows with unobstructed views of Central Park and the Reservoir.

The building’s lobby, clad in marble and accented with stained-glass panels and mosaic tile work, offers a welcoming sense of grandeur.

Cultural and Celebrity Legacy

Though less publicly associated with celebrity, The Turin has long attracted residents who appreciate fine architecture and quiet prestige. It has maintained a reputation as a discreet address, offering old-world charm without the flash of larger, towered counterparts.

Central Park West and Lifestyle

Set between 93rd and 94th Streets, The Turin enjoys proximity to the North Woods of Central Park and the Reservoir jogging path, giving residents direct access to some of the park’s most peaceful corners. The building is surrounded by cultural institutions, excellent public and private schools, and beloved neighborhood establishments like Café du Soleil and Silver Moon Bakery.

A Jewel Box of Architectural Beauty

The Turin may be smaller in scale than its grand neighbors, but it more than makes up for it in character and craftsmanship. With its timeless design, exceptional layouts, and idyllic setting on Central Park West, The Turin offers a level of intimacy and refinement that is increasingly rare in Manhattan.
