The Beresford: Grand Living on the Park

Origins and Construction

Dominating the corner of 81st Street and Central Park West, The Beresford is a majestic, triple-towered pre-war cooperative that has defined this stretch of the Upper West Side since its completion in 1929. Designed by Emery Roth, The Beresford replaced an earlier hotel of the same name and was conceived as a residential palace, combining palatial scale with detailed ornamentation and commanding views of Central Park.

Design and Architecture

The Beresford is renowned for its distinctive three-tower silhouette, intricate façade, and dignified entryway. The base is constructed of limestone, with textured brick rising above. The towers, topped with domed lanterns and decorative urns, crown the building’s skyline presence.

Apartments are generously scaled and include:

  • Expansive floor plans, many with multiple exposures.
  • Step-down living rooms, soaring ceilings, and traditional crown moldings.
  • Wood-burning fireplaces, libraries, and formal dining rooms.
  • Oversized casement windows framing panoramic views of Central Park and beyond.

The Beresford also features a grand lobby with vaulted ceilings and mosaic tile work, a fitness center, and full-time doorman and concierge services.

Cultural and Celebrity Legacy

The Beresford has long attracted high-profile and creative residents, including Jerry Seinfeld, Glenn Close, John McEnroe, and Helen Gurley Brown. Its aura of classic luxury, discretion, and commanding views has made it a preferred address for those seeking gravitas and timeless elegance.

With a history that includes titans of literature, business, and entertainment, The Beresford’s legacy is as impressive as its architecture.

Central Park West and Lifestyle

With the Museum of Natural History just steps away, and Central Park quite literally on its doorstep, The Beresford offers a lifestyle rooted in culture, tranquility, and daily access to one of the greatest parks in the world. The building is also surrounded by beloved Upper West Side cafes, markets, and boutiques, making it one of the most walkable and livable locations in Manhattan.

A Monument to Upper West Side Grandeur

Few buildings rival The Beresford for sheer scale, beauty, and prestige. With its distinctive silhouette, architectural splendor, and cultural cachet, it remains one of the crown jewels of Central Park West—offering residents a home that is as dignified as it is desirable.
